1

Set realistic expectations

Loyalty programmes help, but less than vendors often claim. A peer-reviewed study of Dutch supermarkets found that loyalty membership had a small effect on how much customers spent, about seven times smaller than a simple comparison of members and non-members suggests.

So aim for measurable repeat visits, not a transformation.

Where this comes from

Leenheer, Bijmolt, van Heerde and Smidts, International Journal of Research in Marketing, 2007. Dutch supermarkets, card based. It is the strongest evidence we found, and it is not about Indian shops.

2

Measure your starting point

Before you change anything, note this week's new customers and repeat customers from the home screen. You will compare against it later.

3

Choose up to three actions

  • A welcome offer for the second visit.
  • A reward every few visits, such as a free item after the fifth.
  • A spend goal, in one bill or across several.
  • An offer for quiet hours, or for a festival or date range.
  • Win-back messages for customers who have gone quiet.
  • Birthday and anniversary messages, once dates are recorded.

Three is plenty for a first month.

4

Set them up one at a time

Use the planning guide for rewards and the campaign guide for messages. Switch on one action, check it works, then the next.

5

Bring your staff with you

Your team is part of the programme. Ask them to mention the reward at the counter and to take the phone number on every bill.

6

Review after 30 days

Compare repeat customers with your starting point. Keep one action, change one, and drop one. If you want a stricter test, leave a small group of similar customers out of a campaign and compare, and ask the Fydo team how to do this in the app.

Common mistakes

Easy to avoid once you know them.

  • Doing everything at once

You will not know what worked.

  • Rewards that are too far away

Customers give up before they reach them.

  • Blanket promotions

They cost margin and attract people who would have come anyway.

  • Counting members, not visits

Members are your best customers already. Count repeat visits.

  • Giving up after a week

Customers take time to change habits. Review at 30 days.
